The Running Line

Waiting to board the flight
I've burned my share of bridges
A life in black and white
Spinning out to its edges

I had a mind that was set and a vision as clear
As the distance unreeling between you and me
Cut adrift over Land's End
The Bay of the Mount

I know I can only move upward
And never look round
And when I turn for you
I can no longer see through the cloud
I can no longer see through the cloud

The vapour drifting eastwards
Unfolds as it unveils
My heart is struck inside me
I know the vibrations will ring on through my days

Ocean and air are azure
I can’t make where either ends
But the Eastern Isles are magnified
Like emeralds through a lens

Is this really just the tip of the iceberg
In a wave of farewell washing over me?
For it's only just breaking surface
This landscape and remorse This sweet embrace

Exercise the soul Expose the nerve
Draw out the song and lay it down
All nature's howling voids raging against me
I never believed I could be quite as helpless as this

I'll bite my bitter lips
Til they bleed

We drove the car to the coast and we each made our peace
In a hotel in Penwith we ate our last meal
I made the walk to the exit
And left you behind
